1) Previous experience with AI applications e.g., ChatGPT) and how you have used them (e.g., writing assignments)?
- I have used ChatGPT to help create writing prompts for lessons, create rubrics, find different recipes to cook and help get ideas of things to do when I get bored.
- I have also used Magic School AI to help create rubrics, and I used it with my MT this year to plan a quick lesson to see how it worked and how well it works.
- My mentor teacher this year uses ChatGPT as Educational Technology to help her create rubrics or other in-class activities. For example, we were learning about ladybugs and she used ChatGPT to generate a reading and questions to assess the Grade 3s reading comprehension skills.
- The school has a tech room where classes can sign up and use communal Chromebooks.
- Each classroom has and utilizes a Smartboard, which allows teachers to present and interact with digital content in a way that is more interactive and engaging for students.
- My class has an iPad that is used as a translator for the ELL students. The iPad is also used to take pictures of the student's work to post on Google Classroom to share with their families.
- I know that technology is the way of the world now and is used constantly every single day, but my question is, is there too much technology in schools now?
4) Why is the question important to YOU?
- This question is important to me because when I was in school, especially elementary, I barely used technology. I know that technology is important and is all around us, so I understand why schools use and teach about it. However, with the use of technology, I believe that young people do not know how to spell probably because they use spell check or predictive text to spell things. Would taking some of the usage of technology out of school help with this?
Hi Alyssa. Using AI is so helpful to learning and teaching!! You were really observant in noticing how technology can be used in everyday life and for learning. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with technology and learning, I had a really similar one! I also wonder how we can work on something like spelling for younger kids as I notice predictive text can make things easier resulting in less kids learning the spelling of words as they learn them. . .
ReplyDeleteI love that your classroom had an iPad for your ELL students! Your comment about iPads for pictures reminded me that we always take photos of student work to be posted on my MT's Instagram page to keep parents and other teachers in the loop. I also wonder if there is too much technology in schools...my MT's are young and do not utilize technology much in the classroom apart from their coding unit, and so far I have really liked that.
