Blog #6 - End of Semester Reflection
During my practicum, I used AI to plan my lessons and create rubrics. When planning my lessons, the main thing I used AI for was to create my "I can" statements using the specific KUSPs. When it was time for assessment, I used MagicSchool AI to help create rubrics by entering the grading point scale (1-4) and the criteria I was going to mark them on. This helped me get a baseline and I was able to edit anything that needed to be changed to make more sense.
My main takeaway from this course was how useful and beneficial using technology as a teacher is. It can help make lesson planning, creating assessments, creating slides and so many things so much easier and faster. I will be using AI to work smarter, not harder in my future practicum and teaching career. It is also useful for the students because they get to learn how to use technology in a safe and fun way that allows them to learn practical life skills that they will continue to use in the real world.
My burning question was “is there too much technology in schools now?” After completing this practicum, my answer would be no, at least not in the school that I was at. There was actually not a lot of technology used in the classroom, besides the Smartboard and the odd time when the students got to use the school iPads or Chromebooks. I tried to incorporate technology into my activities but because the iPads are shared with the whole school, sometimes it was hard to get them booked, so sometimes it was just easier to try to plan a lesson without the use of technology.
Throughout this course, and practicum I was able to contribute to the learning of others by being able to share some AI resources that I have found such as MagicSchool AI which is an amazing resource to have as a teacher. It can help plan lessons, create rubrics, create slides, and so much more. I think that this is a tool that every teacher should use as it helps save so much time which is needed with this busy career. I was able to learn a lot from my peers and mentor teacher. I realized how easy it is to integrate technology into other subject areas, for example, in science I had the students code a water cycle using Scratch Jr. I was also shown incredible online resources to make my job as a teacher much easier and less time-consuming. Technology is a very beneficial tool and we need to embrace it and use it to our advantage.

Hi Alyssa! I resonate so much with what you talked about here, especially because we shared so many of the same experiences this practicum being grade 3 "sliding door" neighbours! Something I talked about is how great technology and AI can be for planning, but how explicitly you have to build up to technology integration in the classroom-- it is so much work and managing of expectations! Kudos to you for integrating Scratch and challenging yourself to navigate coding for Science with your class :)
